Fort Worth Mosquito Control
- September 12, 2019
In Texas, we are blessed with great weather pretty much year-round. That means our outdoor spaces get a lot of use and it also means that we have to share that space with bloodthirsty mosquitos. Here in Fort Worth, we have one of the longest mosquito seasons in the country. Beginning in around March, mosquitos come out of hibernation and start annoying us with their incessant buzzing and itchy bites. Luckily, we have the mosquito control tips to help keep you safe.
Mosquitoes are more than just a pain in the neck. They also carry deadly diseases such as Zika, West Nile Virus, and the recent surge of EEE is starting to make the news around the country. Follow these tips to help keep you and your family safe from mosquitoes this year.
Make sure your screens are in good shape and consider replacing them with a 16-18 mesh to keep out even the smallest mosquitos. Inspect your home’s foundation for cracks and be sure to seal them with caulk or cement if you find any.
A well-maintained swimming pool usually has too many chemicals for mosquito larvae to survive, but if you slack on your pool duties you may find mosquitos using your pool as a breeding area. Covering your pool with a cover seems like a smart way to keep mosquitos out but covers collect rainwater and can do more harm than good when it comes to mosquito control.
Mosquitos only require a small amount of water to deposit their eggs, so take the time to take a quick inventory of your yard and make sure that buckets, flower pots, children’s toys, old tires, and anything else that can hold water, is dumped out and dry. This method is one of the most effective ways to control mosquitoes and you will experience a noticeable difference in the population of these annoying insects.
Over the winter our gutters can get clogged with leaves and other debris. Clogged gutters retain water for a long period of time, enough time for mosquitoes to take advantage and turn your roof into a mosquito breeding zone. Take the time to get up on the roof and make sure your gutters are draining properly.
Holes, ditches, and low areas with poor drainage collect standing water. Drain these areas or dill them in to prevent mosquitoes from using them to hatch a new generation of terrorizing mosquitos.
As with eliminating standing water, disrupting mosquito breeding cycles is one of the best mosquito control tips. It’s far more effective than trying to repel them. Luckily, it’s quite easy to make your own DIY mosquito trap.
Mosquitos won’t be able to resist the smell of the brew. They’ll enter through the top of the trap and get stuck in the liquid inside where they will drown. You can place a few of these around your yard to help drive down the mosquito population.
